CHAPTER TEN ON LINE MUSTACHE MAN

            “Yes. I found you. I’ve been looking for you for a long time, Mustache Man.”

            “And you brought me here to this place you called “The Vault.”

            “I brought you here so you could be safe. Safe from what or whom, Pete?”

            “I can’t tell you. I can’t tell you because I don’t know.”       

            “Who follows you when you disappear and why do you feel people die around you?”

            “I can’t go there.”

            “You have to.”

            “I don’t want to go there.”

            “I’ll be with you, Pete.”    

            “You might disappear yourself. I saw you do that.”

            “Only when Shul calls me.”

            “Shul?”

            “Detective Robert , my ex partner. You’ll meet him.”

            “Is he coming here?”

            “That depends. Who’s following you, Pete?”

            There was silence. Carlton checked her instruments. Pete Vargas was still here. He wasn’t disappearing. Not yet. She was pressing him. He was resisting of course. She had to press him for Shul’s sake. The Mustache Man knew something about why people were disappearing, why people were dematerializing out of their loved one’s grasp.

            If he did disappear she would follow him into the spinning, sucking darkness.
